February 9th, 2008 · Posted by Toor · 3 Comments

Instantbird is a multi-protocol Instant Messaging client that allows you connect to all your different IM accounts. It supports AIM, MSN, Gadu-Gadu, QQ, Google Talk, XMPP, ICQ, Yahoo!, and so on. Instantbird is based on Mozilla technologies and Pidgin libpurple library. Here’s how to run it on Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon.

  1. The latest version of Instantbird is 0.1. You can download it at here.
  2. Extract the tarball file using this command:
    tar zxvf instantbird-0.1.tar.gz
  3. Go to instantbird-0.1 folder:
    cd instantbird-0.1/
  4. Now we can run Instantbird:
    ./instantbird.sh

So does this have more or less features than Pidgin? I see that it uses the Pidgin libpurple. Why not just use Pidgin then?
