Google has released Picasa 2.7 Beta for Linux. This release features include upload to Picasa Web Albums, save edits to disk, folder hierarchy views, improvements to Import, better RAW support and many other enhancements. This HOWTO shows how you can install Picasa 2.7 Beta on Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon.
1. Open your /etc/apt/sources.list file with gedit:
$ sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
2. Add the following line and save file:
deb http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/ testing non-free
3. Download GPG key from here and run this command:
$ sudo apt-key add linux_signing_key.pub
4. Install Picasa:
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install picasa
Now you can run Picasa by clicking Applications → Graphics → Picasa → Picasa.

You should substitute “stable” for “testing”:
deb http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/ stable non-free

Could be mistaken but I believe that in point 2, you need to replace ’stable’ with ‘testing’ if you want the latest beta version.

Picasa still runs through the WINE application layer and thus is worthless. It would be nice if more people pointed this out - IT IS NOT A NATIVE APPLICATION, unlike Google Earth.

I never got the argument “still runs through the WINE application layer and thus is worthless”. What’s bothering you? Is it too slow for you to use? It does not offer enough features?
Wine is one of the most amazing pieces of software I’ve ever seen. So… the fact that one application uses it… it’s not a problem for me.

dedukes@ you need to save that pgp file or whatever extension, on your desktop or in your home, then drop to terminal and do the command in step 3 (of course doing the command after you navigate to the folder with the file.) good luck
