How To Display RSS Feeds on Your Ubuntu Desktop

October 8th, 2007 · Posted by Toor · 2 Comments

I installed the latest version of Conky (1.4.7) on Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. To my surprise, Conky can now download and parse RSS feeds. That’s really very cool. The following steps will show you how to display RSS feeds on your Ubuntu desktop.

1. Install Conky, you can run this command in your terminal window:

sudo apt-get install conky

2. Create a configuration file:

zcat /usr/share/doc/conky/examples/conkyrc.sample.gz > ~/.conkyrc

3. Add the following to the end of .conkyrc file, e.g.:

${rss http://phorolinux.com/feed 60 feed_title}
${rss http://phorolinux.com/feed 60 item_titles 10}

  • http://phorolinux.com/feed — Your favorite RSS feeds URL.
  • 60 — Automatically update RSS feeds every 60 minutes.
  • 10 — Display 10 items.
