I am a Gmail fan. But Gmail Notifier only supports Windows and Mac. So I found cGmail for Linux. With cGmail, you can automatically check for new messages and see a snippet of text. cGmail is available for the GNOME desktop, and support gmail and pop3, pop3s, imap and imaps accounts.
Installation
The latest version of cGmail is 0.4.1. You can get Ubuntu deb package from here. Save to ~/Desktop folder. To install cGmail, use these commands:
$ cd ~/Desktop
$ sudo dpkg -i cgmail_0.4.1_all.deb
Usage
1. Run cGmail, click Applications → Internet → cGmail menu command. This will open cGmail window.

2. In cGmail window, click New button. Then enter username and password.

3. Click Start Service.
If you want to configure cGmail, you can open preferences dialog box.

what’s difference between cGmail and Mail Notification applet?

The main problem is that the password of the accounts you configure are totally plain text at $HOME/.config/cgmail/, so seems to be a bad idea sending the plain text over the connection to check if you have email or not…
Seems like this must be a must-solve-problem… in my opinion
